The ACUVUE Sydney Uni Flames Presentation Night for the 2008-2009 season took place at the Rydges Camperdown on Thursday, 19th March. It was a night that celebrated their excellent development season, in which many junior players stepped up to fill starting positions in a young side.

During the evening a number of important awards were presented and significant awards included:

Alicia Poto – Southern Design ‘Most Valuable Player’ (WINNER)

Eva Afeaki – Southern Design ‘Most Valuable Player’ (Runner Up)

Sally Potocki – Southern Design ‘Impact Player of the Year’ (WINNER)

Molly Lewis – Southern Design ‘Impact Player of the Year’ (Runner Up)

Rodney Tubs – Program Person of the Year

Kiera Shields – Coaches Award

Angus Wildblood – Recognition Award

And a big thank you was made to Kim Vernon – from KIMAGES, who was again working on the special night to capture all the memorable moments.

Team veteran, Alicia Poto was also rewarded for her excellent contribution to the WNBL this season, winning the Robyn Maher Defensive Player of the Year Award. Poto’s tenacious defence restricted her opponents and disrupted the play of opposition teams throughout the season. The 166cm point guard grabbed a career high 53 steals in the season to lead the league at an average of 2.5 steals per game and tallied 75 rebounds at an average of 3.6 rebounds per game.

It was wonderful to see the support for the ACUVUE Sydney Uni Flames program – not only radiating from delighted family and friends, but from coaching staff, sponsors, fans, the Elite Athlete Program and the greater Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness community.

It’s hoped that some of the player’s season will be capped off with selection into the Australian Opals Squad for 2009.
