A gallant, unbeaten 144 from opener Will Hay helped Sydney University to first innings points over UNSW in their two-day, round 10 fixture at Sydney University No.1 Oval.
Hay cracked 20 boundaries and a six in his 279 minutes at the crease as Sydney University chased down UNSW’s 286 to declare at 2-292. The visitors were 2-71 at stumps in their second innings, giving Sydney University first innings points and lifting them to fourth on the competition ladder on 56 points behind Bankstown (75), Penrith (58) and Gordon (56).
And with a second successive clean-sweep across the five grades, Sydney University now top a tightly contested Sydney Grade Cricket Club Championship ladder on 1082 points, ahead of Campbelltown-Camden (1013), Penrith (993) and Gordon (985).
Having won the toss and given UNSW first occupation of the crease, the hosts battled to keep the visitors in check as Murray Creed (76), Mitchell Gowland (42), Tim Lang (38), Richard Nikolovski (37) and Ross Lyons (37) pushed the score along.
The efforts of NSW fast bowler Mark Cameron were welcomed by Sydney University as his 5-59 off 21 overs testify.
Hay and fellow opener Ben Larkin batted out a testing 12 overs to finish 0-37 at stumps on day one, with the prospect of a long day at the office the following Saturday.
And that’s exactly how it transpired, with the pair pushing the score to 157 before Larkin departed for 74, with seven boundaries and a pair of sixers to his credit.
Greg Mail (32) and Ian Moran (30 not out) helped Hay with useful partnerships to secure the six first innings points.
In the process, Hay pushed his season run aggregate to 613 at a healthy average of 43.79.
Second Grade secured outright points to move to second place on the competition ladder, while Third, Fourth and Fifth grades earned first innings points.
Third Grade head their competition ladder, Fourth Grade moved into 9th position, and Fifth Grade are in 6th position.
