Beijing Olympians and
Sydney University Sports Scholarships holders Lachlan Renshaw and Taniele
Gofers will represent Sydney University at the 2008 Australian University Games
in Melbourne.

403 Sydney University
athletes will attend the Games this year. They will attempt to retain the
Overall Champion title after Sydney University won last year.

Renshaw will have a
busy schedule at the Games as he competes in the 100m, 110m hurdles, 200m,
400m, 400m hurdles, 1500m, 3000m steeplechase, 5000m, 5000m walk, the
10,000m, and of course the 800m, the event where he qualified for Beijing and
in which he will be a strong favourite to win. In the University Games’ spirit
of participation, he will also try his hand at the hammer throw, discus, high
jump, long jump, triple jump, javelin, pole vault and shot put.

Gofers will be a
member of Sydney University’s Women’s Division 1 Water Polo team who will attempt
to defend their gold medal from last year’s competition.

Other promising
representatives of the university include 100m butterfly Australian all-comers
record holder Matt Jaukovic, and defending champions Sydney University women’s
hockey and football and men’s badminton teams.

Sydney University is
the most successful university in the history of the Games, having won the
Overall Champion title eight times, from 1995-96 and 1999-2003 inclusive, as well as last year.

The Australian
University Games will be held from September 28 – October 3. Participants can
represent their universities in 28 sports. For the first time, the competition
is open to all comers and is divided into separate competitive and social
categories. No regional qualification is necessary.
