The future of swimming at Sydney University looks bright after Sam McConnell and Emma Gray won silver medals in their 50-metre freestyle events in the recent State Age Championships.
Gray, 18, missed out on gold by one hundredth of a second, finishing in 26.77 behind Ryde’s Monique van Balen. Gray also finished fourth in the 100m backstroke and sixth in the 100m freestyle.
McConnell, also 18, shaved over half a second from his qualifying time to finish second in 23.22sec behind Jeremy Stock. He also reached the final in the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly, and narrowly missed out in the 100m backstroke.
Another Sydney University swimmer, James Etter, finished fifth in the 200m breaststroke final and sixth in 100m breaststroke final.
The medals capped a successful meet for Sydney University, which was represented by five swimmers.
