Wet weather caused play to be abandoned in the NSW Premier competition First Grade match between Sydney University and Eastern Suburbs on day two at Sydney University Oval on Saturday.

The big wet cost the hosts and their adversaries any chance of securing first innings or outright points.

But the vagaries of the weather allowed Penrith and Sydney to secure first innings wins on Saturday. Penrith secured six points with a win over Hawkesbury at Howell Oval, while Sydney accounted for Western Suburbs at Pratten Park.

As a result, Penrith head the Belvidere Cup ladder on 13 points on percentages over Sydney (13), with Sydney University (8), Northern District (7), Parramatta (7) and Mosman (7) making up the top six.

The Students can atone when they meet Sydney at Drummoyne Oval in a two-day match starting next Saturday.

Sydney University Seconds secured a first innings win over Eastern Suburbs at Trumper Park on Saturday, thanks to an unbeaten 111 from newcomer Varun George, who shared a 110-run third wicket partnership with skipper James Larkin (55).

Sydney University posted 4-291 in reply to Eastern Suburbs’ 7(dec)-290 to earn six competition points.

George franked his Saturday form with an unbeaten 83 in Sydney University’s nine wicket loss to Bankstown in their first round Poidevin-Gray Shield fixture at Bankstown Oval on Sunday.

Sydney University Third Grade had to settle for a draw when play on day two was abandoned at Camperdown Park, while Fourth Grade crashed in sticky conditions at Snape Oval.

The hosts declared overnight on 8-276 and rolled the Students for 86, thanks to Steven Lewis, who claimed 6-5 including a hat-trick.

The rain also cost Fifth Grade from securing first innings points over Eastern Suburbs at St Paul’s College Oval.

Having posted 256, mostly on day one, the Students had Easts on the ropes at 7-94 when played was called off, with each side securing one point.
