Sydney University will take on Manly-Warringah in a qualifying final of the Sydney Grade competition after finishing second to UNSW at the end of the competition proper.

Despite posting a clean-sweep over UNSW in the round of 50-over matches at the weekend, Sydney University just failed to reel in Manly-Warringah for the Club Championship and UNSW for the minor premiership.

Manly-Warringah finished with 1564 points in the Club Championship, 20 points clear of Sydney University on 1544. They were well ahead of third-placed Sutherland (1376) and fourth-placed St George (1333).

The Club Championship is calculated on a club’s performances in First Grade through to Fifth Grade, as well as the AW Green Shield (Under 16) and Poidevin Gray Shield (Under 21) competitions.

First Grade Limited-Overs and First Grade Twenty20 matches are only counted if those matches were also part of the First Grade Premiership.

The fight for the minor premiership was also a nail-biting finish, with UNSW finishing on 85 points, ahead of defending premiers Sydney University (83), North Sydney (74), Randwick-Petersham (70), Manly-Warringah (65) and St George (63).

That has resulted in qualifying finals between UNSW and St George, Sydney University and Manly-Warringah and North Sydney and Randwick-Petersham (venues to be confirmed).

The three winning teams will progress to the semi-finals (March 24-25), along with the highest ranked losing team. The grand final will be played over three days starting on March 30.

Sydney University will also contest qualifying finals in Second Grade, Fourth Grade and Fifth Grade, along with the Metropolitan Cup team, who finished with the minor premiership.

In women’s cricket, Universities will contest the finals series in First Grade, Third Grade and the Brewer Shield.
