While Sydney University’s men’s Premier League hockey team created history on Saturday by making the finals for the first time in more than 25 years, the club’s women’s First Grade team went about their job with a minimum of fuss as they cruised to their second consecutive minor premiership.
On Sunday morning, Sydney Uni’s women’s team thrashed Gordon North Sydney 4-0 to finish as Sydney Women’s Hockey League Metro I minor premiers. The girls lost just two of their 18 games this season.
This weekend Sydney Uni take on the second placed Briars, with the winner progressing straight to the Grand Final. The Students defeated Briars 3-1 in last year’s grand final to become the club’s first team to win a Sydney Women’s Hockey League Metro I decider.
This season eight of the clubs 10 senior women’s teams have won their way through to the finals series, making Sydney Uni almost certainly the strongest women’s hockey club in the country. The division four and six teams joined the club’s division one team as minor premiers, while Sydney Uni’s u17s and u15s teams are also through to the finals in their junior competitions.
Sydney University Hockey Club (SUHC) Treasurer, Anne Simmons, says the club is extremely proud of the representation in this year’s women’s finals series.
“Almost every hockey turf in Sydney will have a Sydney University women’s team playing in the finals this Sunday,” said Ms Simmons.
“A massive congratulations to the coaches and players and good luck for the coming couple of weeks! Let’s get out in force this weekend and cheer on the students as they continue their success in Sydney women’s hockey!”
