The sun came out in Perth, and our USYD Lions shone bright on Day 3 of competition at the 2016 Australian University Games. Teams now look to solidify their position in their pools, as we head into cross-over rounds.

Womens basketball took on long-time rivals Monash University. Sydney Uni looked strong, coming out hard in the 3rd quarter to push a 7 point lead. However, Monash clawed their way back into the game, with an equal score of 35-35 at the buzzer. The teams will most likely match-up again in the cross over rounds where Sydney Uni will be sure to have the advantage.

Volleyball again looked strong across the board in the competition. The mens team defeated ACU (3-0) but then went down to Melbourne University (3-2) in their first loss of the year. The team are sure they can bounce back when a key player re-joins the squad as they move into the finals. Womens volleyball also split a pair, defeating Adelaide (3-0) but dropping the match against QUT (3-2)

The baseball cynics had a big day on the field, taking on a strong Griffith side early on and coming up short (6-2). However, they reclaimed their winning style taking out two strong wins against QUT (7-2) and UNSW (14-5) in which #49 hit a huge home run, knocking it over the road behind the field.

Water polo had a dominate display in the pool. The women put on a clinic for QUT, taking out the win by 24 goals (25-1) and taking down Melbourne (17-2).

Ultimate men look strong going into the finals, notching up three wins on the board throughout the day against UOW (15-3), UWA (14-6) and Melbourne (15-5). Ultimate women continued winning, taking down UNSW in a close match up (9-8) and Monash (15-2). Mixed Netball followed suit taking down Edith Cowan University (63-33).

Tennis men and women both took wins in straight sets. Badminton women followed suit putting in a 5-0 win over ANU and USQ throughout the day. The men took a 5-0 against UWA but unfortunately fell short of Melbourne (5-3)

Football Men defeated a strong Monash team (1-0) and then had a tight match up against Melbourne University (1-1). The women’s team took out dominate women’s against Curtin University (7-0) and Adelaide (5-0) in the quarter final as they progress to the semi-final.

The touch teams had a strong day on the field, with the mens and women’s squads both taking out wins as they progressed to the semi-finals. Table Tennis moved through the group stages, taking out a win against UNDA to progress to the semi-finals.

With only two days of competition remaining, Sydney Uni is looking very strong across the board. Good luck to all of the teams in elimination matches over the coming days.
