Sydney University’s women’s AFL team won a berth in the 2016 grand final with a 59-31 win over Newtown Breakaways at Henson Park on Saturday.

Tara McKenty kicked two of Sydney University’s eight goals against the 2015 premiers in a hard-fought local derby.

The Breakaways won the 2015 flag with a 40-26 result over the Students.

Sydney University will meet UNSW Eastern Suburbs at Blacktown International Sportspark at 3.13pm next Saturday.

They met in the 2014 grand final which Sydney University won 37-20.

Meanwhile, Sydney University’s NEAFL men’s side were beaten 117-30 by Greater Western Sydney Giants in a sudden-death preliminary final at Blacktown International Sportspark on Saturday.

It was a disappointing end to a season of solid results from the Students.

Greater Western Sydney Giants 17.15: 117 (Rhys Palmer 4, Sam Reid 3, Daniel Lloyd 2, William Hoskin-Elliott 2, Adam Kennedy 2, Jack Stewart, Dawson Simpson, James Steele, Connor Byrne) defeated Sydney University 4.6: 30 (Jacob Derickx 2, Jordan Law, Michael Manteit) at Blacktown International Sportspark on Saturday.
