Sydney Uni Athletics Club (SUAC) won the NSW Club Championships in both the men’s and women’s divisions over the weekend, producing arguably the most dominant performance by any club in the history of the event.

In the women’s event the SUAC girls scored an amazing 586 points, tallying more than double the points of second placed Illawong who scored 286 points. The men’s event was also one sided with SUAC scoring 548 points with second placed UTS scoring 380 points. Incredibly, SUAC athletes won 15 of the 36 contested events over the weekend.

Standout performances on the weekend came from Josh Clarke who ran a very impressive 10.38 seconds in the men’s 100m while Ella Nelson secured the sprint double for SUAC with a win in the women’s 100m posting a time of 11.72 seconds. For Nelson the time was only 1/100th of a second outside her personal best which augers well for the rest of her season considering she ran into a stiff headwind.

Georgia Wassall returned to form running her best 1500m for the season taking the win in a time of 4.28 minutes. In the men’s 1500m the ageless Ben Liddy lead from the front and took the win. Other great performances came from Annie Rubie who comfortably won the 800m in her first race back from injury. Natalie Archer also back from injury, won the 5000m by a large margin with another man on the comeback trail Christian Lozada not only winning his event but posting a personal best time in the 400 hurdles, which was his first in three seasons. Nicole Fagan took out the women’s 5000m walk adding to her NSW title she had won the night before in the women’s 10000m walk.

SUAC showed great depth in both relays recording the fastest times in Australia this year in both the men’s and women’s 4x100m events. The men’s team ran a very slick 40.25 seconds (third fastest time ever by an SUAC team) despite a slow second change which saw Justin Merlino emerge out of the change zone with the baton in the wrong hand. In the women’s event the girls posted a time of 47.5 seconds to win the event by a significant margin.

In the field events SUAC were also well represented with Becky Clark winning the High Jump, Chrissie Grun winning the Javelin and the big man Matty Mountford asserting his dominance to take the win the Pole Vault, which was one of the incredible 8 events he competed in over the weekend. Special mention must also go to Andrew Giltrap who contested 7 events on the weekend for the club finishing as high as 4th place and securing a huge swag of points for SUAC.

SUAC second place getters on the weekend included- Mason Cohen (800m), Milly Clark( 1500m), Maddy Bergfield (Shot), Katrina Blackett (Javelin), Natalie Apikotoa (Triple Jump) and Annabelle Parmegiani (High Jump).

SUAC third place getters included- Lizzie Jenkins (400m), Em Ryan (1500m), Maddy Bergfield (Javelin), Jin Jung (100m).

The NSW Club Championship win adds to the club’s first place result in the Open Division of the Treloar Shield just before Christmas. In that competition SUAC were able to defeat nearest rival UTS Norths by more than 1700 points and took home the Open Pennant for the fourth consecutive year.

In the NSW Heptathlon championships held concurrently, SUAC’s Jacqui Fry won her first state title recording a score of 4691 points.

In the 2014/15 Summer Premiership, SUAC has a commanding lead with only the NSW Track and Field Championships remaining, it is expected that SUAC will be able to defend their title in both the men’s and women’s division.
