The NSW women’s hockey team, containing five Sydney Uni Hockey Club representatives, have fallen just short of the 2012 Women’s Australian Hockey League Championship, after going down to Victoria in Saturday’s Grand Final.

Mathilda Carmichael, Nina Khoury, Georgie Morgan, Cara Simpson and Hollie Webster (all SUSF Elite Athlete Program scholarship holders) were part of the NSW Arrows squad that were defeated 5-1 in the final, but crucially Khoury was absent for the final.

Khoury was ruled out of Saturday’s match after aggravating an existing injury in the Arrows 2-1 upset defeat (in which Khoury scored) of the table topping Queensland scorchers, who lost just two games all tournament – both to NSW.

Despite an early goal from Sydney Uni’s Georgie Morgan on Saturday, the Arrows proved to be no match for the ruthless Victorians, who went on to win by four goals and claim the 2012 Championship.

In the Australian Hockey League (AHL), Sydney University men’s player and former SUSF Elite Athlete Program scholarship holder Tom Lobsey finished in sixth position with his Canberra Lakers team, after being defeated 2-1 by North Territory in Saturday’s 5 v 6 playoff match.
