Having lost the 2009-10 Sydney Grade Cricket limited overs final two weeks ago, Sydney University saw another possible title slip away on Sunday when they were bundled out of the Poidevin-Gray Shield.
Playing Penrith in a semi-final of the shield, the Students amassed 9-188 off their 50 overs, but could not contain Penrith, who rattled off 1-191 off just 39.3 overs to earn a berth in the final with St George.
After winning the toss and batting at Howell Oval, Sydney University slumped to 3-33 before Chris Jones joined opener Ben Larkin in a 56-run partnership. But when Jones was run out for 41, the Students struggled through their 50 overs, with Larkin remaining not out on 89.
Penrith quick Max McNamara provided most of the problems for Sydney University, finishing with 5-21 from his 10 overs.
After Penrith lost opener Jordan Silk for 17, Jarryd Blake (91 not out) and No.3 Tim Cummins (72 not out) put on a 171-run partnership to clinch the semi-final.
