The ACT women’s rugby team claimed some revenge for their loss at the Kiama Sevens a fortnight ago with a  24-10 win over Sydney University in the final of the Paper  to Paper 7’s By The Sea tournament held at Warringah Rugby Club’s home ground, Rat Park,  last Saturday.

Sydney University showcased their strength as a club by entering two teams in the Warringah tournament.

Sydney University Seconds, led by Dani Cormican, competed in the Second Division Bowl competition and, after performing well in the pool rounds, finished runners up.

Sydney University First’s progressed undefeated through the pool rounds to a rematch of the Kiama Sevens final against ACT.

The Students began well, posting two tries before half-time. Both resulted from excellent passages of play featuring power and speed and both were scored by Iliseva Batibasaga.

The second half started well for University but ACT’s blitz defence led to a vital intercept, resulting in a try. ACT then took the lead with a converted try resulting from a turnover at the ruck.

Playing catch-up football, Sydney University chanced their arm, but another intercept saw Kristy Giteau power down the wing to score and seal the match.
