Sydney Uni Swim Club was represented by 17
swimmers at the National Open Short Course Swimming Championships held 14th-18th
July in Brisbane.

Sydney Uni finished with 1 gold medal, 1
silver medal, 10 finals swims, 17 semi final swims and numerous personal
bests.  The great team performance saw
Sydney Uni finish 15th in the overall point score. Head Coach Bobby Folan said
“The team’s results were exceptional.  It
is great to see the depth in the club with all the swimmers’ hard work paying
off with great performances.”

Matthew Abood was the standout male
performer finishing with a gold medal in the 100m freestyle in a fast 47.05 and
a silver medal in the 50m freestyle 21.75, just behind Kyle Richardson who won
in 21.62.

Abood has been chosen to represent Australia at the 2010 Fina World Short Course
Championship in Dubai.

Newest team member, Meagan Ramsay, was the
standout female performer finishing with 2 final swims, 1 B final swim and 2
NSW state records. Meagan  finished 8th
in the 400m individual medley final (4:42.79) narrowly outside her personal
best time which she set in the morning’s heats (4:40.19).
Meagan broke
the 18 years NSW Age Record in the 400m IM by over a second.  The previous record was set in 1992 (the same
year Meagan was born!) by triple Olympian, and Commonwealth Games gold
medallist in the 200m IM, Elli Overton.

Meagan Ramsay swam a great race to finish 7th
in the 100m individual medley 1.02.89 finals, breaking the 18 years NSW Age
Record for the third time in 2 days. Meagan also competed in the B final in the
200m individual medley finishing 13th in 2.15.85.

Meagan’s third final was the 200m
breaststroke where she finished a very creditable 8th place in
2.28.68.

Stephen Parkes return to National level
swimming was a success with Stephen finishing 4th in the 100m
individual medley in 54.46 narrowly missing a podium finish by .1 sec.  Parkes also competed in the B final 200m
individual medley finishing 11th in 1.59.36 and the 200m freestyle
in 1.48.65 placing 15th
Parkes also swam the B final in the 200m butterfly finishing 15th
and semi finaled in the 50m fly finishing 15th in 24.46.

Gemma Johnson made her first final at a
National level competing in the 50m butterfly finishing a creditable 7th
in 27.02.

Kate Johnson swam personal best times in
the 100m and 200m butterfly semi finals to narrowly miss a finals spot
finishing 10th in 1.00.46 and 2.11.51 respectively.

David Wise finished 12th in the
50m backstroke semi finals in 25.39.

Tim Halliday made it through to his first
ever major championship semi final competing in the 50m fly and 100m individual
medley finishing 15th in 24.46 and 14th in 56.46
respectively.

Emma Gray made the semi finals in the 50m
butterfly finishing 14th and Sam McConnell in the 100m butterfly,
also finishing 14th.

Sydney Uni was also well represented in the
relays.  The men’s 4 x 100m freestyle
relay A team (Gordon Willis, Sam McConnell, Stephen Parkes and Matthew Abood)
finished 5th and the B team ( Dylan Curtis, Tim Halliday, David
Wise, Carlos Stephenson) finished 8th.  The women’s 4 x 100m freestyle relay team
(Gemma Johnson, Kate Johnson, Christine Kidd and Emma Gray) finished 10th
.      

In the Men’s 4 x 100m medley relays,
the  A team put in a incredible
performance to finish 4th in 3.38.27.  The team consisted of David Wise, Stephen
Parkes, Sam McConnell and Matthew Abood. 
The B team of Tim Halliday, 
Alistaire Pickles, Dylan Curtis, Gordon Willis finished a creditable 10th.
The Women’s team  of Gemma Johnson, Kate
Johnson, Christine Kidd and Emma Gray finished 12th.
