Amelia Kirgan:
Amelia Kirgan is a fourth-year student at the University of Sydney, majoring in Psychology and Criminology, and preparing for her third UniSport-Nationals, where she will represent Sydney Uni in Netball. A veteran competitor, Amelia has already competed in two Uni Games and a NSW Uni Games, making her a familiar face on the Nationals stage.
Amelia’s journey in Netball is decorated with notable achievements. She has made three NSW state teams (2020, 2021, 2023) and was selected for the 17/U Australian Squad in 2021. Currently in her fifth Premier League season, Amelia is competing in her second Grand Final and fourth finals series. Her leadership skills have shone through as she captained NSW teams at the 15s and 17s levels and earned accolades at every Uni Games she’s attended, from Perth to the Gold Coast. As a former captain of the QBE Swifts Academy and her U23s Premier League team, Amelia’s commitment to her sport is undeniable.
Beyond her athletic pursuits, Amelia has also taken on leadership roles off the court, serving on the NSW Athlete Voice Committee from 2020-2022. This role allowed her to actively shape the future of premier competitions and make critical decisions on behalf of her fellow athletes.
For Amelia, Nationals isn’t just about the competition; it’s about the friendships and unforgettable memories. As she reflects on her journey, she emphasizes the joy of playing with friends and the reminder of why she fell in love with sports in the first place. For Amelia, the thrill of Nationals lies in its unique combination of elite competition and the sheer love of the game.
As she prepares for this year’s campaign, Amelia is ready to lead Sydney Uni’s netball team with the same passion and determination that have defined her career. Off the court, Amelia’s fun side shines through—she can juggle but struggles with bikes, and she even starred in an anti-bullying ad during her childhood that still follows her into university lectures. Though she’s serious when it comes to netball, her lighthearted nature brings a refreshing balance to her leadership.
