The 2015 Eastern University Games are upon us again and as 175 students head up to freezing cold Wagga Wagga, it is looking like USYD are ready be the best University in the East.
This year’s EUG team comprises of 16 teams competing in basketball, futsal, lawn bowls, golf, netball, tennis, touch, ultimate frisbee and volleyball.
Our women’s basketball team, lead by USYD female team captain Eleni Valos, will be looking to secure consecutive gold medals and build on that fantastic win in Newcastle last year. Meanwhile, the men’s team led by USYD men’s team captain, Josh Russel, will be looking to improve on their bronze medal performance of last year.
The futsal women are out for revenge after narrowly losing the gold medal last year. Under the guidance of Alice Kriesler, the team will be aiming for Gold, while the men’s team will be looking to get into medal contention this year, being led by Kieran Hayes.
This year we are sending three lawn bowls teams. Last year we didn’t have any medal success but this year the teams are looking good to snatch some podium places.
We are also taking our very competitive golf and tennis teams. Both teams have stacked their line ups and are looking to get Gold in both disciplines. The competition is looking very tough in both draws but we have every hope that both men’s teams are going to be pushing for top spots.
Our netball teams are looking to build on last year’s successes. The women’s team are hoping to go one better than last year and take the gold in Wagga, while there is pressure on the mixed team to perform in order to qualify for Australian Uni Games later in the year on the Gold Coast.
This year’s Touch teams are led by the fearsome team captains, Anna Millington and Calypso Lowrey. The girls have chosen three extremely competitive teams and we are hoping for all three teams to come away with medals this year.
The Ultimate Frisbee team is looking to build on the previous year’s successes. This is the last mixed competition of the year for the team, as for the first time at Australian University Games there will be an all-female and all-male team to compete on the Gold Coast. This EUG team is full of veterans in Andy Wood and Rebekah Burns, and is coached by Ultimate legend Brett Latham. This team will be on the hunt for the Gold medal.
This year we welcome back Volleyball into our EUG schedule as they took a break from EUG’s last year. Will Antony Rowda will be leading the team, with the boys looking to set the bar high this year.
