Kendo (meaning “way of the sword”) is a traditional Japanese martial art that draws on several elements of ancient samurai culture. As a martial art, it involves fast-paced armoured sparring with bamboo swords (shinai) and places great importance on etiquette, focus, and hard work.
The USYD Kendo club (established 2004) offers practitioners a chance to immerse themselves in all aspects of Kendo, including tournaments, regular training, formwork (kata) and a strong sense of community.
The club trains at Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre on Tuesdays and Fridays from 6-8pm. There is also a beginners class from 1:30-3pm at the Arena Sports Centre on Sundays.
To join the club, fill out the expressions of interest form on the website – opening February 2026.
