The final of the 2015-16 Sydney Men’s Twenty20 Cup was postponed on Sunday when a late afternoon storm hit the Sydney Cricket Ground as the two combatants were preparing for battle.
Sydney University and Randwick-Petersham had earlier won their preliminary finals at the SCG and were preparing for a 6.30pm start when the heavens opened. The final will now be played at Coogee Oval on Sunday, November 29, with a 2.30pm start.
Sydney University accounted for Northern District by 41 runs in their preliminary final.
Opener Ryan Carters, coming off a double century for an Australian XI side against New Zealand, topscored with 31 off 26 deliveries. He put on a useful 56-run opening partnership with Nick Larkin, who collected 26 from 33 deliveries.
Liam Robertson’s 28 off 27 balls and Tim Ley’s 24 not out off 26 balls kept the scoreboard ticking over.
The Students then restricted Northern District to 9-81, with Ben Joy (3-20), Will Somerville (2-15), Nigel Cowell (2-20) and Tim Ley (1-10) the best of a miserly attack.
Randwick-Petersham (7-146) defeated Manly-Warringah (6-134) by 12 runs in the other preliminary final to earn a berth in the final with Sydney University.
Meanwhile, Sydney University collected first innings points in a low-scoring, Round 4 Belvedere Cup fixture at No.1 Oval on Saturday.
Skipper Nick Larkin backed his bowlers when he won the toss and sent Sutherland in on the first day to the two-day affair.
And they delivered, with Nigel Cowell (4-28), Ben Joy (2-10) and Greg Mail (1-8) helping to dismiss the visitors for 117.
Sydney University replied with 6(dec)-125, with Larkin (50) and Greg Mail (44) providing the bulk of the runs.
Sutherland batted out day two to finish at 7-235 as Sydney University strove for an outright result.
Chris Williams (60 not out), Mitch Brown (59) and Ben Dwarshuis (54) occupied the crease for long periods, while Will Somerville (3-78), Greg Mail (2-22) and Tim Ley (2-48) were the best of the bowlers.
The highlight of the round came in the Second Grade fixture at Glenn McGrath Oval, where 17-year-old Sutherland leg-spinner Devlin Malone rattled reigning premiers Sydney University with match figures of 16-138, including the rare feat of all 10 wickets in the second innings, as the hosts collected outright points.
Malone took 6-23 in Sydney University’s first innings of 88. Sutherland replied with 181 and then dismissed the Students for 268, with Malone collecting 10-115, leaving his side chasing 176 for victory.
They reached 4-177 off 35 overs, thanks to solid knocks from Peter Saroukos (44 not out), Matthew Hughston (40 not out), Dylan Smith (39) and Doddapaneni Rushi Raj (35).
Sydney collected first innings points in the Third Grade clash at St Paul’s College Oval, while Sutherland won on the first innings in Fourth Grade at Sutherland Oval, and took outright points in the Fifth Grade clash at Camperdown Oval.
Sydney University will take on Northern District in Round 5 of the Sydney Grade competition on November 7 and 14, with the First Grade fixture scheduled for Mark Taylor Oval.
