Sydney University will contest the women’s and men’s grand finals of the 2024 University Basketball League after both teams posted solid wins in their semi-finals on Wednesday.

The women’s side defeated the University of Tasmania 82-63 at the SUSF court, while the men’s team accounted for the University of Melbourne 83-71 at the Melbourne campus.

The Lions will meet La Trobe University in both grand finals after the La Trobe women’s side accounted for the University of Tasmania 90-62 and the men’s side defeated the University of the Sunshine Coast 95-69 in their semi-finals.

The University of Sydney finished second on the women’s ladder on 25 points behind the University of Tasmania (25), with UTS (25), La Trobe (25), Curtin University (21), ACU (21), Victoria University (21) and UNSW (19) making up the top eight. The Lions defeated Victoria University 65-59 in their qualifying final to advance to yesterday’s semi-final.

Carla Pitman posted 16 points for Sydney University in the semi-final, with Madeleine D’Almeida (13), Lauryn Walker (11), Caitlyn Martin (11), Alexandra Kayrouz (10) and Alexandria Oliver (10) also notching double figures. Dalia Walker led the UTS scoring with 17 points.

The University of Melbourne were the minor premiers on the men’s ladder on 25 points, with La Trobe (23), UTS (23), Sydney University (23), University of Tasmania (21), UniSC (19, UWA Maali (19) and AU Waatu (17) making up the top eight. Sydney University defeated the University of Tasmania 83-67 in the qualifying final to advance to the semi-final.

Joshua Pain led the scoring with 18 points in yesterday’s win, with Robbie Moore (15), Mitchell Smith (13) and Alexander Sinhu (10) also posting double figures, while Joshua McNally topped the University of Melbourne’s scoring with 17 points.

Sydney University will host the women’s grand final from 1pm on Wednesday, 29 May at New Balance Stadium, and La Trobe will host the men’s grand final from 1pm on Thursday, 30 May.
