Sydney University Australian National Football Club (SUANFC) Seniors defeated University of New South Wales- Eastern Suburbs (UNSW-ES) by 26 points over the weekend to win the prestigious University Challenge Cup.

The SUANFC Seniors side won 61 points to 35 points. This is the first time SUANFC Seniors have won the Cup which was created in 2007.

Seniors side coach, Roger Moten, said the teamed performed extremely well at every contest in the poor weather.

Daniel Archer, Sydney University Scholarship Holders; Brydon Coles, Ben Mankarious and sixteen year old Collingwood FC Scholarship Holder and NSW U/18 Representative; Tom Young were among the team’s best players on the day.

“It was a particularly courageous win in the wet conditions against a bigger, physical and more highly fancied Bulldogs side,” said Jason McLennan, president at SUANFC.

“Taking out the University Challenge Cup for the first time since it was established in 2007 is a terrific reward for new coach Moten and his young, developing side who are starting to gel together and develop a winning approach.”

The win means the SUANFC Seniors side now sit seventh on the ladder above St George, Balmain and Wollongong after eight rounds.
