Sydney Uni Water polo Club is set to make an impact at the inaugural U23s Tournament, to be held at Sydney Olympic Park Sports and Aquatic (SOPAC) from the 4th-7th June 2009.

The brain child of Consolidated Sports Management’s Greg Willett, this competition will award substantial prize money for first ($5000) through to sixth ($500) place.

‘It will be a major stepping stone for U20s players who are looking to move onto the National scene. The same type of competition has been successfully undertaken in Europe,’ said Head Coach John Davies.

The competition shall consist of 5 Sydney teams, 2 Brisbane teams, 1 team from Victoria and 1 team from Adelaide – Sydney Uni, Balmain, Drummoyne, Wests, Cronulla, the Barracudas, the KFC Breakers, the Tigers and the Jets, respectively.

Each team will also be allowed to include a ‘marquee’ player – someone who is not U23, with most clubs drafting in a National player.

Sydney Uni’s marquee player will be Rob Maitland, who has just returned from playing in the Spanish national league.
