Let the Games begin. That was the cry from the tennis fraternity on staff at the Sydney University Sports and Fitness Centre when the Blue and Gold doubles teams were announced at the weekend.
Doubles Tennis, the first discipline of the 2008 SUSFC Staff Games, will commence at university courts on Monday, November 17, with the Blue team to be captained by Anthony Ellison and the Gold team to be co-captained by Ross Xenos and Renee Payne.
Ellis has a strong contingent in Cameron Radford, Michael Culkoff, Trish Fallon, Neil Finlay, Rod Tubbs and Tony Jackson, while Ellison will be joined by Pru Turnell, Priscilla Turnell, Matt Rennick, Chris Haddin, James Hall and Tim Starkey.
Ellison says his team is full of youthful exuberance.
“It’s just what is needed to go up against a team of old heads who seem to think their experience and well-oiled groundstroke techniques will be enough to take the points on the first discipline of the SUSF Staff Games,” he said..
Gold Team captains Payne and Xenos held a team meeting last Tuesday – cleverly masked as the Melbourne Cup function – where terms such as “training tapers” and “form of their life” were commonly sprouted.
With a war of words having erupted this week, Monday can’t come soon enough for the first Games discipline.
It has been determined that the top two pairings from each team will play off in the semi-finals, with the final to be held on Court 1 on Friday, November 21, to be followed by a social function, where hostilities will give way to bragging.
