Sydney University has finished its 2026 University Basketball League campaign on the podium, with the men claiming bronze through a commanding 91-59 win over the University of Tasmania.

The result provided a fitting response to the disappointment of a semi-final defeat just a day earlier, giving Sydney a winning finish to a season in which both its men’s and women’s teams reached the knockout rounds.

For the men, the road to bronze included a home quarter-final against Curtin University. With their season on the line, Sydney secured an 85-76 victory to book a place in the final four and keep its hopes of a Grand Final return alive.

A semi-final meeting with the University of Melbourne followed at Nona Lee Sports Centre. Sydney made a promising start, taking a 21-14 lead into the quarter-time before Melbourne fought back to edge ahead 37-36 at the main break.

The hosts created separation in the third quarter and Sydney was unable to close the gap, falling 81- 68.It was a disappointing end to the teams’ championship hopes after reaching the Grand Final in 2025, but there was still a medal to play for.

The Lions were able to make the most of their opportunity against Tasmania. Returning to the court the following day, the men delivered a decisive 32-point victory to secure third place. The 91-59 result ensured their final appearance of 2026 ended with a medal and a win.

The women’s campaign also featured a place in the finals, following an encouraging opening to the season. Sydney began with two wins to sit at the top of the women’s standings after the opening round.

Their season ultimately came down to an away quarter-final against Adelaide University at Pridham Hall. Sydney finished 10 points short, with Adelaide taking the contest 74-64 before going on to reach the Grand Final. While the result ended Sydney’s campaign earlier than hoped, qualifying for the knockouts rounds gave the squad another opportunity to test itself against the competition’s leading teams.

Across both squads, the season represented months of training, travel and competition. The results capture only part of that effort, with players, coach and supporting staff all contributing to the campaign.
