Sydney Uni Sport proudly celebrates the historic selection of alumna and Elite Athlete Program (EAP) member Lara Hamilton, who has been named in the Australian team for ski mountaineering at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. This milestone marks Hamilton’s first Olympic team selection and places her among the pioneers of a sport making its Olympic debut.

Ski mountaineering is one of the most physically and mentally demanding winter disciplines, requiring athletes to ascend and descend steep alpine terrain using a combination of endurance, technical skill, and tactical decision-making. Competitors race against the clock while navigating extreme conditions, showcasing both climbing strength and downhill precision, a true test of all-round athleticism.

Hamilton’s Olympic journey is underpinned by a strong connection to the University of Sydney. A Bachelor of Music Studies student and Elite Athlete Program participant from 2016–2019, she balanced the demands of high-performance sport with academic study, a hallmark of the EAP’s commitment to supporting dual careers. During her time as a student-athlete, Hamilton represented Australia at the 2017 World University Cross Country Championships, highlighting her exceptional endurance base long before transitioning fully into ski mountaineering.

Her selection for Milano Cortina 2026 is not only a personal achievement but also a proud moment for the Sydney Uni Sport community, reflecting the long-term impact of investing in student-athletes and providing pathways that support success on the world stage.

As Hamilton prepares to compete in Italy, SUAC and the wider University community will be cheering her on, celebrating a trailblazer in Australian winter sport and an inspiring example of what is possible when academic ambition and athletic excellence align.
