A fine bowling performance from Devlin Malone helped Sydney University to a 64-run win over Western Suburbs in their two-day, Round 4 Belvidere Cup match at Pratten Park on Saturday.
The 24-year-old leg-spinner finished with 6-93 off 30 overs to restrict the hosts to 299 in reply to Sydney University’s imposing first-day tally of 363. Western Suburbs skipper Joshua Clarke, batting at No.3, kept his side in the contest with a fine 135, which included 11 boundaries and a pair of sixes. But when he was clean bowled by Kieran Tate with Wests on 272, Malone cleaned up the tail, with the last four wickets falling for the addition of 27 runs. Clarke and opener Arnav Raina (90) had earlier put on a 185-run stand, with Raina hitting 12 boundaries and two over the ropes.
The Students had won the toss and batted on day one of the contest and were all out late in the day off 87 overs, leaving the hosts to face an awkward time before stumps. They finished on 11 without a loss.
Damien Mortimer, batting at No.3, topscored for the University with 72. His 98-ball stay included 11 boundaries, and he shared a 99-run partnership with opener Ryan McElduff (35). Sydney University’s middle order backed up the solid opening with Dylan Hunter (69), Hayden Kerr (41), Jordan Gauci (39) and skipper Tim Cummins (29) contributing to the big total. Hunter’s 89-ball stay included nine boundaries and two over the ropes.
Muhammad Irfan was the best of the Western Suburbs bowlers, collecting 4-57 off his 20 overs.
SUCC Seconds also collected first innings points in their Albert Cup clash with Wests at University Oval on Saturday. Don Butchart was the star of the day, collecting 6-67 as Wests posted 258 in reply to the University’s first-day total of 9(dec)-373. Wests had several solid contributors in the big chase, including opener Blaise McKee (67), Liam Sparke (54), William Chesterfield (28 not out) and James Cisternas (28).
Having won the toss and electing to bat, Sydney University’s big first-day total was largely due to opener Hayden Storey, who cracked 167. His 208-ball stay included 21 boundaries and five over the ropes. The big total was also helped by No.5 Ravi Wikramanayake’s 79, which included nine boundaries and a six. Western Suburbs were 0-13 at stumps on day one.
Sydney University Thirds suffered a 119-run loss to Western Suburbs in their Mitchell Cup clash at Blick Oval. The hosts were 5-232 at stumps on day one and declared at 8-287 on day two. Jason Hughes (85), Farhan Zakhail (68), Kyle Wheeler (44 not out) and Benjamin Brooks (35) were the main contributors, while Josh Toyer finished with 3-79 for the Students.
The hosts then dismissed Sydney University for 168, with Zain Shamsi collecting 4-41 and Harjapan Singh taking 3-49. Charlie Dummer topscored for the Students with 44, with Brayden Dilley (39) and Luka Flannigan (31) the other main contributors.
Sydney University Fourths collected first innings points in their Reid Cup match with Wests at St Paul’s College Oval.
Having won the toss and batted, the Students were all out late on day one for a solid 282. Opener Dom Goddard topscored with 89, while his opening partner Clancy Barrett (35), Nivek Tanner (31) and skipper Ash Cowan (30) were other major contributors.
Wests started day two on 12 without loss but were in early trouble and were eventually all out for 158, with Thomas Marriott (45) and Jack Clark (36) the main scorers. Raveen Ganesh (3-20) and Shuvayu Banerjee (3-47) starred with the ball for the University.
Sydney University Fifths collected outright points in their David Sherwood Cup match with Wests at Marrickville Oval. Wests’ decision to bat after winning the toss backfired when they were dismissed for 97. Opener Sohum Mogale (31) was the only willow wielder to trouble the bowling, with Mitchell Cotton (3-14) and Jack Manson-Hill (3-18) causing the damage.
The Students declared at 5-165 on the back of Oly Lee-young’s unbeaten 75 and Azhar Saeed’s 42, before dismissing Wests for 79 in their second innings. Cooper Jones claimed 7-31 off 15 overs in a defining spell. Sydney University lost one wicket chasing the 15 runs for outright points.
Meanwhile, Fairfield-Liverpool collected the points with a six-wicket over Sydney University in their Poidevin-Gray Shield (Under 21) Twenty20 tussle at Rosedale Oval on Sunday. Having won the toss and batted, the Students finished their 20 overs on 8-104, with Chris Roussos the main run-getter with 41 off 45 deliveries. The hosts replied with 105 off 16.1 overs with the loss of four wickets. Yuva Nishchay (32), Yurav Sharma (28 not out) and Max Farmer (22) were the main contributors to the win.
Dylan Hunter was the star of the day at Rosedale Oval on Sunday when he smashed 120 off just 60 deliveries in Sydney University Firsts’ 148-run T20 win over Fairfield-Liverpool.
Batting at No.3, Hunter cracked nine boundaries and eight over the Rosedale Oval fence as he rattled up a strike rate of 200.00. He shared a 171-run partnership with Damien Mortimer, who posted 67 off 39 deliveries, including five boundaries and a pair of sixes. Devlin Malone then backed up his six-wicket effort on Saturday claiming 5-7 off four overs as the hosts succumbed to be all out for 64 off 14.1 overs. Arjun Nair (16) was the only batsman to reach double figures.
The fifth round of the NSW Women’s Premier Cricket competition saw Penrith post a win over Universities in their Twenty20 clash at Bill Ball Oval on Sunday.
Having been given first use of the wicket by Universities, Penrith posted 9-97 off their 20 overs, with Aarya Shipurkar (3-22) and Kiah Martin (2-6) the main destroyers and Rebecca Cady (13) and Elise Noble (11) to only batters to reach double figures. The hosts then backed up the modest total by restricting Universities to 9-79 off their 20 overs to take the points. When openers Frankie Nicklin (23) and Ciara Gibson (23) put on a 43-run stand and No.3 Jess Davidson (11) helped the score to 3-69, Universities looked within reach of a win. But it was not to be against some tight bowling from the hosts.
Universities Second Grade also went down in a tight contest with Penrith at Bill Ball Oval.
Having been sent into bat, Universities were all out for 71 off their 20 overs. Nicola Wheeler (12) Ira Patel (10) and Evie Donovan (10) were the only batters to reach double figures.
Penrith was nine wickets down when they reached 72, with Gunisha Garg topscoring with 27, while Rebecca Green was the pick of the Universities bowlers with 4-2 from her four overs.
Campbelltown Camden accounted for University with a 50-run win in their T20 fixture at Harrington Park Public School on Saturday.
Having won the toss and batted Campbelltown Camden posted 5-102 on the back of Dilki Senanayake’s 28 and Leanne Wardale’s 25 not out. They then dismissed Uni for 52 in 18 overs. Opener Annapurna Mukherjee topscored with 15, while Senanayake backed up her efforts with the bat, taking 5-11 with the ball.
