Sydney University Canoe Club members won the Student category of the gruelling Myall Classic, held in windy conditions on the Myall River at Tea Gardens, on the NSW Central Coast, at the weekend.

James Walsh and Kyle Salkeld combined to finished first in the 27km Student category of the event in 3:04:54.9, with Corrina Mittman and Steaven Bachinadanda coming in second in 3:15:00.

SUCC members won the Student Challenge of the Classic in 2018 and 2019 before Covid caused the event to be postponed in 2020 and 2021.

The Myall Classic is a major ultramarathon event on the NSW paddling calendar. There are a range of distances and starting times, intended to see all paddlers complete their chosen course by early afternoon. Distances contested are 12km, 27km and 47km, the longer course being a perfect lead into the Clarence 100 and longer ultramarathon events, including the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic held in late October.

The SUCC paddlers have already indicated they will be defending the Student Challenge in 2023.
