A strong batting performance across the board resulted in Sutherland defeating Sydney University by five wickets to claim the 2018-19 Twenty20 Cup in the Sydney Thunder Conference.

The Southerners won the toss at the Sydney Cricket Ground and decided to bowl. The Students were duly dismissed for 122 off 19.5 overs, with opener Hayden Kerr cracking 40 off 25 balls. Late contributions from Tim Ley (24) and Dugald Holloway (18) kept Sydney University in with a chance.

But Sutherland reeled in the tally in 14.4 overs, finishing 5-123 to take the title. All of their batsmen posted double figures, with Jamie Brown leading the way with a run-a-ball 35. Ben Joy was the best of the Sydney University bowlers with 3-33 off his four overs.

Sydney University worked their way through to the grand final after finishing third on the ladder behind Penrith and Campbelltown-Camden.

They met Campbelltown-Camden in one semi-final and posted a six-run win at Raby Oval. Batting first, the Students amassed 9-130 off their 20 overs, with Nicky Craze (29 off 28 balls), Damien Mortimer (a run-a-ball 26) and opener Hayden Kerr (24 off 15 balls) the main contributors.

Campbelltown-Camden openers Aaron Yabsley (32) and Philip Wells (28) put on a 53-run partnership before the University bowlers hit back. Liam Robertson (2-18) and Devlin Malone (2-20) helped to break the shackles, with solid four-over contributions from Joe Kershaw (1-24) and Ben Joy (0-18).

The win put Sydney University into a preliminary final against Penrith at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The Westies won the toss, batted, and amassed 9-126 on the back of strong contributions from Ryan Gibson (33), Bret Atherton (25) and Cameron Weir (23). Devlin Malone (3-18 and Liam Robertson 2-15) led wicket-taking efforts.

The Students reined in the total in 17.2 overs with loss of four wickets. Opener Nicholas Walker led the charge with an unbeaten 50 off 47 balls, while Liam Robertson (38 off 19) and Nick Larkin (33 off 34) helped the push for a grand final berth against Sutherland.

Meanwhile, Sydney University will resume the NSW Premier competition this weekend on top of the ladder on 33 points.

UNSW (32), Sydney (32), Parramatta (31), Penrith (31) and Randwick-Petersham (30) make up a tight top six.

The Students will meet Bankstown on a limited overs fixture at Bankstown Oval.

Sydney University also head the Club Championship on 856 points, with Parramatta (720) and Penrith (717) the closet competition.
