Sydney Uni swimmers Sam McConnell and Jono Newton have both progressed through to the Mens 50m Butterfly semi finals tonight, at Day 2 of the 2010 Telstra Australian Swimming Championships.

This follows the strong performance of fellow Uni Butterfly specialist Emma Gray, who narrowly missed a berth in the 50m final last night.

McConnell finished 8th in a time of 24.69, to make his first major semi final. Newton finished in 24.72 for 9th position. Both gentlemen swam PBs.

Coach Vanessa Smith feels that both boys have a strong chance at making it through to the finals.

Sydney Uni Men’s 4 x 100 Freestyle Relay Team of Dave Wise, Carlos Stevenson, Gordon Willis, Sam McConnell, finished 6th in the finals at the 2010 Telstra Australian Swimming Championships.

Matt Jaukovic, Dave Wise, Tim Halliday and Dylan Curtis also competed in the Men’s 50m Butterfly, however, were unsuccessful at making it through to the semi finals.

Kate Johnson and Gray competed in the Women’s 100m Freestyle finishing 50th and 55th respectively.

Alistaire Pickles, James Etter and Adam Frost took on the Men’s 100m Breaststroke finishing 23rd, 37th and 57th respectively.

Zane Jordan came 40th in the Men’s 200m Freestyle in a time of 1.54.80.
