A solid win against Canterbury Bankstown (2) on their home courts at Punchbowl on Sunday sees uni assured of a semi final berth in the 2009 Slazenger Inter District competition.

Uni is seeking to claim the prestigious Blackwell Cup for the third time in four years but will face strong competition from Southern Districts and Tuggerah along with last year’s champions, Canterbury Bankstown (1).

Sunday’s encounter was a see-sawing thriller, the slippery court conditions definitely favouring the local side. But with the match poised at four sets apiece after the completion of the singles rubbers, uni’s Kaye Dening AM scholarship holder Nicolas Jenik from Buenos Aires teamed with Borja Malet from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles to clinch the tie with a comprehensive straight sets victory in the No. 1 Doubles.

Barcelona-born Borja is completing an internship in Sydney over the summer break.

“It was a great thrill to play for uni while I’m here,’ said Borja after the win. ‘I can now say that I’m undefeated in the southern hemisphere!’
