Sydney University head both the women’s and men’s ladders after four rounds of the 2023 University Basketball League season.
The University of Sydney hosted the opening round on Tuesday, March 14, with the women’s side defeating Curtin Uni Carnabys 74-44 and backing that up the next day with a 73-49 result over the University of Western Australia Maali.
The men’s team won 90-59 over Curtin Uni Carnabys on Tuesday and landed some crucial late goals to defeat UWA Maali 95-77 on Wednesday.
Sydney University travelled to Melbourne for the second week of competition, with the women’s side accounting for La Trobe University 71-68 last Tuesday and backing up on Wednesday to defeat Victoria University 82-53. The men’s side accounted for La Trobe 77-76 in a cliff hangar and turned out on Wednesday to defeat Victoria University 101-42.
Sydney University teams are not rostered for Round 3 games this week but will prepare to host Fed Falcons at the Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre courts on Wednesday, April 5.
Sydney University head the women’s table, with UTS, University of Tasmania and La Trobe University making the top four, while the men’s team head UTS, University of Tasmania and University of Melbourne in the top four.
UniSport Australia has expanded the UBL this season with
two new universities, the Australian Catholic University and the University of Tasmania, joining the league in the third year of the competition. The inaugural year of the UBL included La Trobe University, The University of Melbourne, The University of the Sunshine Coast, The University of Sydney, the University of Technology Sydney, The University of Western Australia, and Victoria University.
In 2022 Curtin University, Federation University Australia, RMIT University and The University of Adelaide joined the seven founding universities.
The student-only competition has proved popular across the country, building on many historic university rivalries.
The 2023 UBL season proper will include matches each Tuesday and Wednesday for nine weeks, with the Finals commencing on May 15, the Semi-Finals commencing on May 22 and the Grand Finals on May 29.
