The University of Sydney made a solid start to the 2023 University Basketball League (UBL) season, with both the men’s and women’s teams earning victories in Round 1. The games were played at the Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre courts on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The University of Sydney women’s team defeated the Curtin University Carnabys 74-44 on Tuesday and followed that up with a 73-49 win over the University of Western Australia Maali (UWA) on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the men’s team won 90-59 against the Curtin University Carnabys on Tuesday and secured a 95-77 victory over the UWA Maali on Wednesday with some crucial late buckets.
In Week 2, the University of Sydney will travel to Melbourne for matches against La Trobe University on Tuesday and Victoria University on Wednesday.
UniSport Australia has expanded the UBL this season, with two new universities – the Australian Catholic University and the University of Tasmania – joining the league in its third year. The inaugural year of the UBL, known then as the Australian Basketball League (ABL), included La Trobe University, the University of Melbourne, the University of the Sunshine Coast, the University of Technology Sydney, the University of Western Australia, and Victoria University. In 2022, Curtin University, Federation University Australia, RMIT University, and the University of Adelaide joined the seven founding universities.
The UBL is a student-only competition that has proven popular across the country, building on many historic university rivalries. The 2023 UBL season will feature matches every Tuesday and Wednesday for nine weeks, with the Finals beginning on May 15, the Semi-Finals on May 22, and the Grand Finals on May 29.
