Sydney University men’s basketball team has firmly stamped its mark on the global stage, going undefeated to claim the championship title at the 2025 International University Basketball Invitational Tournament. Held from June 25 to June 29 at the University of Macau, the event brought together eight elite universities teams from across Asia- Pacific and Europe in a showcase of elite athletes talent and international sportsmanship.
Representing Australia, Sydney University entered the tournament with high expectations following a strong domestic season and a growing reputation within the university basketball circuit. From the moment they hit the court, they made it clear they were in Macau for the reason to bring home the gold.
Their campaign began with the resounding 115-42 victory over Universiti Sains Malaysia, a dominant opening performance that saw Sydney’s high-tempo offence and defensive pressure overwhelmed their opposition. By the time we faced Seoul National University in their third and final group game. Sydney University had found their rhythm, delivering a ruthless 117-45 blowout win that left no doubt about their championship credentials.
With a clean sweep of the group stage, Sydney progressed to semi-finals where they met tournament hosts, the University of Macau. Despite the local support and familiar surroundings, Macau struggled to keep pace. Sydney’s relentless defence and fast-break execution saw them dominate from the outset, cruising to an 86-53 win and booking their spot in the final.
In front of a packed crowd and with the tournament trophy on the line, Sydney University faced Zhejiang once more in a hard-fought final. Zhejiang came into the game determined to avenge their earlier loss and applied early pressure with strong rebounding and sharp perimeter shooting. Sydney University, showing poise and discipline being able to weather the storm. Led by a deep and balanced roster, they were able to control the tempo, pulling away in the second half, and sealed the championship with a 77-66 victory, their fifth straight win of the tournament.

The blend of competition and camaraderie made the event a standout in the university sports calendar and reinforced the value of sports as a platform for international connection.
For Sydney University, this victory is a milestone moment. It adds to an already impressive run of domestic achievements, including the 2021 UBL minor premiership, the 2022 national title, and the grand final appearance in 2024.
