In one of the most anticipated fixtures on the University of Sydney intercollegiate sporting calendars, Rawson Rugby once again delivered a match of grand proportions, with more than a century of tradition behind it.
Round 3 of the 2025 Rawson Cup saw St John’s College clinch a thrilling 36-28 victory over St Andrew’s College at the Sydney University Football Ground, a final between the tournament’s strongest sides.
John’s ability to keep their composure in the later stages of the games shows class with many 1st Grade and Junior Wallabies lining up. Arthur Greer, Flynn Clatworthy, Eamon Doyle, and Paddy O’Hara all crossed the line to notch up crucial tries. Tom Bull played a vital role in slotting four conversions and a penalty to keep the scoreboard ticking.
The fast-starting Drews came out of the gates fast and early, getting out to a 19-7 lead; Leon Mason-bunton led their charge with two tries, while Beau Morrison added another, with a penalty try keeping the match hanging in the balance within the final stages. Sam Sharman converted three of their four tries, holding Drew’s within striking distance for much of the second half.
In the end, it was St John’s defensive grit and calm execution under pressure that saw them take control in the dying stages, closing out a memorable contest in front of a vocal and passionate crowd. The win marks a significant step towards the Rawson Cup title, as well reinforcing their status as one of the premier rugby programs in the intercollegiate league.
The earlier fixture of the day saw St Paul’s College comfortably account for Wesley College 31-8 in a friendly match.
Despite the result not contributing to the Rawson ladder, Paul made their times on the field count, running in five tries through Bo Baffsky, Will Powell, Ed Taylor, Zac Warden, and James McReeny. Baffsky also added three conversions.
Wesley managed to hit the scoreboard late, but the damage had been done, with Paul’s dominating in both possession and territory.
With Rawson Rugby fixtures now complete, attention turns to the remaining sports of the 2025 Rawson Cup Campaign. St. John’s win over Drew’s puts them in a commanding position to take out the Rawson Cup.
