The University of Sydney’s swimming team put on a powerhouse display at the 2025 UniSport Nationals, walking away with seven medals and a fourth-place finish overall in one of the most competitive university swim meets in the country.
Hosted at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre from May 16 to 18, the championship brought together Australia’s top university athletes. Sydney Uni had some standout individual performances and a strong relay showing, driving the team’s success.
Leading the charge was Elizabeth Gan, who dominated the backstroke events to claim double golds in the women’s 50m and 100m. Caleb Dryer added to the medal counts with a commanding gold in the men’s 400m freestyle and silver in the 200m butterfly.
The team’s depth was on full display in the relays. The men’s 4x50m medley team (Matthew Costelloe, Maximilian Van der Merwe, Max Oldham and Caleb Yoga) surged to a silver medal, while the mixed 4x100m medley team (Caleb Dryer, Lucas Smith, Zannah Dixon, and Elizabeth Gan) collected bronze. The men’s 4x100m freestyle team (Matthew Costelleo, Caleb Yago, Ryan Wilkes, and Max Oldham) also landed on the podium with bronze.
Bond University once again topped both men’s and women’s standings. Still, Sydney Uni’s fourth-place overall finish, backed by 153.5 men’s points and 96 in the women’s competition, signalled a serious presence in the national university league.
From everyone here at Sydney Uni Sport, we would like to congratulate our Swim team on a terrific result, reflecting the consistency and culture that has been built into the squad.
