Sydney University Women’s Rugby showcased their strength and resilience in a thrilling showdown against Bond University at the Australian Club Championship over the weekend in Brisbane. In a fiercely contested match, the two powerhouse teams played out a dramatic 19-all draw, demonstrating their skill, tenacity, and unwavering determination.
The Students’ attacking prowess was highlighted by standout performances from Naomi Nailotei, who crossed the try line twice, and Siusiuosalafai (Nancy) Volkman, who added her name to the scoresheet.
Three players within the squad were voted as the best performers by their teammates. Sherienne Koh, who showcased her relentless work ethic, dominating the pitch and making key contributions throughout the game. Chloe Sanz, who injected speed and attacking flair, proved to be a game-changer with her dynamic play. Meanwhile, Modesty Tafeuni displayed her strength as a ball carrier, playing a crucial role in attack and defence.
This year’s Club Championship squad featured a fresh and dynamic lineup, with only five players from last season’s Grand Final team against Manly. Despite the relative inexperience, the young squad displayed remarkable composure and unity, signalling a bright future for the Sydney University Women’s Rugby.
The result against Bond University underscores the team’s potential heading into the season. With a blend of emerging talent and experienced leadership, the Students have laid a strong foundation for success in the Women’s Premier competition.
