Obssa Youssouf’s story is about perseverance, passion, and community support. At the age of five, he journeyed from Djibouti to Australia with his family. He has grown into an extraordinary athlete and scholar, embodying the values of hard work and determination. Today, Obssa is achieving excellence both on and off the running track, thanks in large part to the generosity of donors supporting programs like the Sydney Uni Sport Elite Athlete Program Scholarship.

Obssa’s journey is deeply rooted in his family’s history. Both his parents hail from the eastern highlands of Ethiopia, where they grew up in small villages, instilling in him a strong sense of cultural heritage and a commitment to education. Encouraged by his mother, who always emphasised the transformative power of learning, Obssa excelled academically from a young age.

Speaking to the University, “ I’ve always been passionate about learning,Obssa shares. This passion eventually led him to the University of Sydney’s Open Day, where he fell in love with the vibrant campus and the wealth of opportunities it offered. The experience solidified his dream of pursuing higher education while continuing to chase his athlete. With access to high-performance facilities, coaching, running gear, and travel for competition, Obssa could focus on excelling in his studies and his sport. “ The scholarship had a profound impact on my university experience,Obssa explains. It allowed me to financially support myself and prioritise what matters most– my studies and my athletic career.”

Obssa’s scholarship was more than just financial support—it was a symbol of belief in his potential. It also reinforced his commitment to giving back.I believe that philanthropy, especially in education, enriches and supports students from diverse backgrounds,” he notes. It fosters a community of like-minded individuals who encourage and celebrate one another through triumphs and tribulations.”

With his degree and promising athletic career ahead, Obssa’s aspirations are as ambitious as ever. Currently working as a technology consultant, he plans to keep growing professionally while competing internationally. Representing Australia in the 800m is a goal that drives him forward, and with his determination, it’s only a matter of time before he dons the green and gold.

Reflecting on the support he received, Obssa expresses gratitude for the donors who have played a pivotal role in his journey. Without their generosity, my university experience would have been far more challenging” he admits. It would have meant working more part-time hours, leaving less time for study and sport.”

Obssa’s story is a shining example of the impact philanthropy can have, not just on individual lives but on entire communities. Donor support creates a ripple effect, fostering a network of excellence and encouragement that benefits athletes, scholars, and future generations.

As Obssa continues to achieve great things, he inspires those who follow in his footsteps. His journey reminds us all that dreams can become reality with determination, passion, and a little help from the community.
