Bert served as the Chief Engineer at Holroyd Council for 37 years, from 1952 to 1989. His vision and dedication were instrumental in transforming Holroyd into a thriving, community-centred area. One of his proudest achievements was the creation of Merryland Ovals- a landmark transformation that saw a creek become an iconic sports facility. Bert was also involved in the department of other significant landmarks, including the Council Administration Centre at Merrylands and Central Gardens Parks, which continue to enrich the lives of residents.
Bert Alderson’s sporting accomplishments are as impressive as this engineering achievement. Representing New South Wales in both sports, he stood out for his talent, consistency, and leadership.
In cricket, Bert scored over 14,000 runs in grade cricket, including a record-breaking 11,014 runs for Cumberland/Parramatta, a record that still stands. His contributions to Sydney Premier Grade Cricket are celebrated across the cricketing community, where he is remembered as a steadfast player and leader.
Bert’s baseball career was equally illustrious. Playing for clubs like Wenty Methodists, Waverley, Western Suburbs, and Sydney University Baseball Club (SUBC), he represented NSW in crucial matches, including several high-stakes games against Victoria at Marrickville and Petersham. He also competed in the prestigious Claxton Shield tournament in Adelaide and Perth. His enduring legacy is cemented by his inclusion in Sydney University’s “Team of the Century” for baseball.
The greater University community holds Bert in high esteem, recognising his dual Blues, in both Cricket and Baseball, as a rare remarkable feat. The prestigious Blue Jacket, symbolising the highest level of achievement in University Sport, underscores Bert’s excellence and versatility. Bert’s time at the University of Sydney, where he had earned both Cricket and Baseball Blues, reflects his exceptional commitment to sportsmanship and his role as a mentor and leader. His association with the Sydney University Cricket Club (SUCC), where he captained the First-Grade team, speaks to his leadership qualities on and off the field.
