The 2024 IHF Men’s Club Championship took place last week in Egypt, with Sydney University Handball club representing Oceania.

In our pool stages, Sydney Uni faced Al Ahly Sporting Club and FC Barcelona.

Our first fixture of the tournament, saw us come up against a strong opponent in Al Ahy Sporting Club representing Africa, unfortunately going down 49-15.

As for our second match against FC Barcelona, a strong first-half display, and some exciting attacking plays weren’t enough against the powerhouse of Barcelona FC going down 53 to 23.

In Sydney University’s third game, they faced the Californian Eagles and came out with a hard-fought 35 to 30 win. The Eagles began well, taking a 10 to 8 lead, but in Sydney University fashion, they answered back with 4 unanswered goals. This proved to be a pivotal moment within the match, as we were able to deliver one of our best-attacking performances of the competition, putting 18 goals past the Eagles in the first half alone.

Both Jermey Gaulin and Lucas Goedert were unstoppable in the second half with the team, combining for 12 goals, each scoring six times, as well as Jan Kleinedam also chimed in with six goals.

At the end of the competition Jan Kleineidam finished in the top 10 goal scorers with 21 goals, and Lino Messerschmidt had the second-best shooting percentage of 94.7% with 18 goals from only 19 attempts.

From everyone here at Sydney University Sport we would like to congratulate everyone involved on a terrific tournament campaign.
