Sydney University Football Club’s three Colts teams are one win away from grand final appearances after winning their semi-finals on Saturday, while the Club’s two women’s teams maintained their unbeaten runs and will contest their grand finals on Saturday.
Two big wins by our Sydney University Women’s teams have seen them advance to Grand Final week being played at our very own Sydney University Football Ground this Saturday the 24th of August. An opportunity to see history made with our Women Xs side kicking off at 1:45 pm against Eastwood. Our Women’s XVs side will be playing straight after at 3 pm against the Manly Mermaids for the Jack Scott Cup.
The Jack Scott Cup team had a tremendous win against Warringah with the final score being 49-5. A double to Halley Derera set Uni in great stead, as well as tries for Millicent Scutt, Jemima McCalman, Kate Barry, Brittany Merlo, and Briana Hoy, while Fly-half Grace Freeman kicked 3 conversions, a penalty goal and scored a try to cement a big win for the students. The game earlier in the day saw our women’s X’s come up against East, another dominating display making the University proud with a convincing 41-12 display. Doubles to both Outside center Annique Omodiagbe and Prop Kailani Leota helped toward victory and to the big dance, they were helped with tries from Jayda Kinikini, Modesty Grace Tafeuni, and Ami Naito who were sharpshooters with their kicks as Tafeuni kicked two and Naito kicking one.
1st Colts accounted for Warringah 48-33 in their semi-final at Pittwater Rugby Park. Hooker Bryn Edwards and winger Nacani Batidravu each scored two tries, while Edward Moala, Eamon Doyle, and winger Tom Watts also crossed the line. At the same time, five-eighth Henry James landed five conversions and a penalty goal for the students.
The students will meet Gordon in an elimination final at 5 pm on Saturday straight after the Women’s Grand Final, with Randwick and Eastern Suburbs contesting the other eliminator for berths in the W. McMahon Shield grand finale.
2nd Colts defeated Warringah 17-12 in their semi-final at Pittwater, with lock Cameron Webster and wingers Josiah Vatubua and Cooper Edwards scoring five-pointers and fly-half James Beverley landing one conversion. Sydney University will now meet Eastern Suburbs in one elimination final with Randwick and Gordon contesting the other for berths in the Shell Trophy grand final.
3rd Colts moved within one game of the grand final with a 21-5 result over Warringah at Pittwater. Lock Alex Purser, flanker Kai Roberts and reserve John Rowe scored tries for the students, with fly-half Archie Matthews landing three conversions.
Sydney University will meet Southern Districts in one Bill Simpson Shield elimination final, with Eastern Suburbs and Gordon contesting the other.
