Sydney University Football Club hooker Tolu Latu is poised to make his Wallabies Test debut in the clash against Wales at Principality Stadium, Cardiff, on Sunday morning (1.35 AEDT).
Wallabies coach Michael Cheika named Latu in the 23-man squad to take on the Welsh in the first Test of the Spring Grand Slam Tour, which also includes Tests against Scotland, Ireland, England and France.
Latu, who made his NSW debut this season, was in the squad on the Rugby Championship trip to South Africa in September but didn’t get to take the field off the bench. In the same match against the Springboks, SUFC prop Tom Robertson came off the bench to become capped Wallaby No.898.
Latu was also one of seven SUFC players in the squad for the October Eden Park Test against the All Blacks in Auckland, but once again didn’t get a run.
He joins SUFC teammates, fullback Israel Folou, five-eighth Bernard Foley and halfback Nick Phipps, in the squad to meet Wales. Flanker Dean Mumm missed selection after receiving a one-match suspension.
The first game of the 2016 Spring Tour will also mark an historic occasion when the Wallabies run out for their 600th Test.
Cardiff was also the venue when the Wallabies defeated Wales 38-3 in their 300th Test more than 15 years ago.
