Young leg-spinner Devlin Malone snared 5-53 to help Sydney University to first inning points over Manly-Warringah in their two-day Belvidere Cup match at Sydney University Oval on Saturday.
The 18-year-old put the stress of Higher School Certificate examinations on hold to send down 25 testing overs, with his well concealed wrong ’un worrying all batsmen.
Interestingly, four of his victims were bowled while the other fell to an lbw decision.
Malone came on as first change after Thomas Rogers (3-14) and Tim Ley (2-42) had worked their way through the top of the Manly-Warringah batting order.
The visitors started day two of the match at 1-4, chasing Sydney University’s massive 1(dec)-424. They held on for 68 overs before being all out for 147, with No.4 Jay Lenton topscoring with 56 and opener Ryan Farrell contributing 33.
Sydney University skipper Nick Larkin cracked 204 not out and Greg Mail posted 179 in a 337-run stand in the host’s first innings on day one of the contest.
The undefeated Students will now take on Hawkesbury at Owen Earle Oval in another two-day round on October 22 and 29.
