Sydney University opened the 2016-17 Sydney men’s premier grade cricket season with a six-wicket win over Campbelltown-Camden in a 50-over fixture at Sydney University No.1 Oval on Saturday.

A 133-run fourth wicket partnership between Ashton May (60 not out) and Greg Mail (85) helped the Students to reach 4-169 in 45 overs in reply to Campbelltown-Camden’s 168 off 49 overs.

Mail, the leading runscorer in the history of the competition, cracked 10 boundaries in his 103-ball stay, while a more sedate May hit six boundaries in a 117-ball occupation.

He had reason to shore up the innings, having entered the fray with Sydney University reeling at 3-21.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat under sunny skies and, while Jordan Browne (31), Scott Coyte (29) and Ashley Paddison (27) all made solid starts, they were bowled out in the 49th over for 168.

The main destroyer was Devlin Malone with 4-31 off 10 overs, while May chipped in with 2-37 off 10 overs.

The Students lost Second Grade by 67 runs, but won Third, Fourth and Fifth grades to kick-start the Club Championship on a positive note

Sydney University will meet St George at Hurstville Oval in another 50-over round on Saturday.
