Sydney University stayed alive in the NSW Tertiary Cup rugby league competition with a 30-18 win over Western Sydney University Ducks in their minor semi-final clash at Norford Park on Saturday.
The win puts Sydney University up against TAFE Western Sydney Polecats in the final to be played at the new Sydney University Football Ground (No.2 Oval) at 3pm next Saturday.
The winner of that fixture will book a berth in the grand final against University of Technology Sydney Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on September 9.
UTS Tigers booked a grand final berth with a 12-10 win over the Polecats in their major semi-final clash on Saturday.
Jake Vrahnos scored two Sydney University’s six tries in the minor semi-final win, with Kelvin Quinn, Wilson Lotu, Adam Vrahnos and Jay Parker also crossing the stripe. Miles Fowler landed three conversions in the workmanlike win.
The Ducks finished fifth on the ladder at the end of the competition proper but earned a semi-final berth when fourth-placed Australian Catholic University were stripped of their competition points for fielding unregistered players.
Sydney University’s Division Two side dipped out of the competition with a 42-30 loss to UTS Tigers in their minor semi-final on Saturday.
The loss wasn’t without controversy. Sydney University had two key players – Jay Parker and Daniel Rowe – sin-binned at the same time and the Tigers took advantage to post points while they were off the field.
Organisers of the Tertiary competition are negotiating to play the four men’s and women’s grand finals at Leichhardt Oval, with the men’s Division One match to be played under lights, with a 6.30pm kick-off.
