Sydney University Lions returned to the winner’s circle in Division One with a solid 46-16 victory over University of Western Sydney Ducks in Round 10 of the NSW Tertiary Rugby League clash at Henson Park on Saturday.
Jack Vrahnos led the scoring three tries, while his brother Adam scored twice and converted seven of the eight attempts including three from the sideline to cap off an excellent performance by the Lions against a determined Ducks outfit.
The Lions dominated field position throughout, with solid defence from Miles Fowler, Michael Ambados, Adam Vrahnos and Kurt Lewis forcing the Ducks into errors and playing out of their red zone.
With the forwards laying a solid platform, the Lions backline of Joe Andrews, Anthony Jury, Jake Vrahnos and Jeremy Smith were allowed to show their class and they were superb in penetrating the Ducks’ defence.
The try of the match came in the 29th minute on the back off a powerful run by Man of Match Ambados who carried three and four defenders for 25m and managed a quick play the ball to allow some clever dummy-half play by Smith skirting wide of the ruck to find the ever present Adam Vrahnos with an inside pass. He sliced through the defence like a hot knife through butter and raced 30m to score under the posts.
Coach Brian Greige praised Ambados and the Vrahnos brothers for their great games and wants his team to focus on improving their concentration in the back end of games in attack and defence, work on goal line attacking ruck play and general attacking set plays.
Round 11 of the Tertiary Cup competition, on June 25, will see Sydney University Lions take on Cumberland Beavers at Ollie Web Reserve with First Division kicking off at 3pm and Second Division starting at 1.15pm.
