  3. Sydney Uni named champions of 2016 Unibattle Basketball

The University of Sydney has dominated the 2016 Unibattle 3×3 basketball competition, coming home with the top spot for both the men’s and women’s league.

The University of Sydney men’s and women’s squads, from the Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness’ (SUSF) Basketball Club, will join Auckland University of Technology and the University of Auckland in representing FISU Oceania at the 3×3 World University League competition in Xiamen, China in November.

The University of Sydney is excited about the prospect of representing Australia in an international competition.

“The excellent result from both our men’s and women’s teams exemplify the strength of the basketball program at the University of Sydney. These athletes have represented the University of Sydney at multiple Australian University Sport events and it is great to see their success expanding to a 3×3 context. Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF) are incredibly proud of their achievements this week and we are looking forward to supporting them in the upcoming competition in China,” said Pippa Temperley, SUSF High Performance Coordinator.

This will be the second year that the Unibattle 3×3 basketball men’s champions have competed internationally. Southern Cross University topped their pool and secured a top six finish at the 2015 FISU 3×3 World University League, also held in Xiamen, China.

It is the first time that the qualifier round for the Australian women’s team was held at Unibattle – Monash University women won bronze after qualifying through a separate competition in 2015.

Australian University Sport (AUS) CEO Don Knapp says Unibattle, and particularly the international trip to China, demonstrates the value sporting opportunities available to university students hold in generating stronger student retention, completion and graduate employability attributes.

“A key aim of AUS is to enable student-athletes to participate in competitive sport at regional, national and international levels and Unibattle 3×3 offers all of this and a great student experience through sport,” Mr Knapp said.

“This event activates broader participation at both elite and social levels across our 42 member universities.”

The 2016 Unibattle attracted 250 student-athletes from across Australia to the Gold Coast for a friendly but competitive three days of sport.
