The Sydney University Women’s Rugby club (SUWRC) defeated arch rivals Warringah Rats 18-0 on Saturday, April 9.

Over the years the Rats have been the most lethal attacking club team in women’s rugby and for Sydney Uni to completely shut them out was special.

The game began with no inch given by both teams, however Coach Phil Brown felt the students had the edge in physicality both at the breakdown and off set piece.

As the team worked into good attacking positions, the students were rewarded with two penalty goals by Ash Hewson and held onto a 6-0 halftime lead.

The 2nd half had similar intensity. Sydney Uni continued to dominate the breakdown and after many probing runs from our forwards, Sera Naiqama was able to score the first try. Later in the game Ash Hewson, who had controlled the game from the outset busted through and set up Fi Jones with a well-deserved try.

While all players deserve accolades for a job well done Fi Jones, Sera Naiqama and Taz Sheppard were outstanding and special mention to Ili Batibasaga.

Sydney University 18 (Sera Naiqama, Fi Jones tries; Ash Hewson 1 con, 2 pen goals) d Warringah 0 at Grantham Reserve on Saturday, April 9.
