The Australian women’s water polo team, comprising of current Elite Athlete Program members and alumnae, have taken back to back wins against China, securing the three-test series for the Stingers in Perth.
Sydney University Lions’ Keesja Gofers and Hannah Buckling contributed goals to the 10-5 victory, while Lea Yanitsas made crucial saves. Bronte Halligan and Isobel Bishop also formed part of the impressive squad which held the Chinese scoreless until the third quarter.
Given the final team of 13 for Rio 2016 will be selected from this pool in June, the test series and 10 days training camp with China provided opportunity for the squad to test combinations and allow players to stake their claim on Olympic selection.
Australian goal scorers: Hannah Buckling, Glencora McGhie, Ashleigh Southern (2), Nicola Zagame, Holly Lincoln-Smith, Jayde Appel, Keesja Gofers (2), Zoe Arancini.
Scores after quarter time: Q1 AUS 2 CHN 0; Q2 AUS 5 CHN 0; Q3 AUS 8 CHN 3; Q4 AUS 10 CHN 5.
