After the weekend’s two home games, the Sydney Uni Men’s Lions remain in first place on the NWPL ladder, with 14 wins from 17 games, while our Women hold in the top six at fourth position, with 13 wins from 17 games.

Both our Men’s and Women’s teams have played slightly more games than their closest rivals on the ladder.

The Sydney Uni Lions Women’s and Men’s teams both secured valuable wins over the visiting Victorian Seals on Saturday January 23, 2016. Our Women’s team cranked- up both offense and defence in the final two quarters to drive home their advantage in an otherwise very tight game at the half-way point where they led by a single goal. Similarly, our Men showed their fitness and drive to get the jump on the Seals in the last two quarters.

The next day both of our teams went down to local rivals, the Cronulla Sharks. A standout for the losing Women’s Lions was Keesja Gofers, who picked up a double against the Sharks on the back of her four screaming goals the day prior and appears in red-hot shooting form. The Men’s contest against arch-rivals Cronulla proved a thriller in every aspect of the game. The Lions were down 9-7 with a minute to play, somehow conjuring a 9 –all tie at full-time. The match then went to a penalty shootout for the first time in a couple of seasons, for the Lions, however Cronulla prevailed 13-12 to take the bonus point.

There are no games for either of our Men’s and Women’s teams next weekend as other teams attempt to catch-up on deferred games.

There are just five games left in the regular season before the Finals and at this stage both our teams are looking in a strong position.
