The Australian women’s water polo team, comprising of current Elite Athlete Program members and alumnae, have taken gold in a penalty shoot-out against USA in Rio this morning, 13-10.
After five wins and one draw the team have finished on top as part of the six nation competition.
While all games have been hard fought, the Stingers came in confident looking for a repeat result after dominating the USA in the rounds, 13-6.
Locked 9 a piece at full time, Rowie Webster, Ash Southern, Keesja Gofers and Gemma Beadsworth managed to score under intense penalty pressure to secure victory for Australia.
The Aussies have had a great run in Rio having beaten USA, China, Brazil and Netherlands, a draw against Canada, and the gold medal match win.
FINA have confirmed that water polo will be played at Maria Lenke at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
