The Sydney University Athletics Club (SUAC) enjoyed one of its most successful evenings at the Athletics NSW Awards Dinner held recently at Sydney Olympic Park, winning an array of awards across a number of categories.
SUAC took home the most prestigious award of the evening, the Metropolitan Club of the Year. SUAC were nominated along with rivals UTS Norths, with SUAC prevailing and sending historians scrambling to determine the last time the club had won this honour.
Considering the year the club was able to put together, which included winning every senior club title at metropolitan, state and national level, having 15 athletes represent Australia, including 10 selected in the Commonwealth Games team, the award seemed to be just reward for a phenomenal effort from the Club and its membership.
Other awards on the night went to Nick Hough who won the ‘Best Senior Sprints /Hurdles’ as well as ‘The Best Performance by a Male at the Australian Championships.’ Shelly Jenneke took home the ‘Presidents Award,’ while Nicole Fagan won the ‘Donis Clark Award for Best Female Distance Walker’ and Georgia Wassall won the ‘Best Junior Middle Distance Athlete.’
At the NSW Cross Country Championships held Saturday at Kembla SUAC continued its run at another men’s and women’s Winter Premiership. In the women’s event SUAC’s Milly Clark won her second NSW Cross Country title with Emily Ryan having her best placing in the event finishing 3rd. Miranda Middleton finished 6th with Rosie Weber in tenth to make up the women’s team. The SUAC women’s team won the teams race which sees them move to 25 points clear of Athletic East at the top of the competition table.
In the men’s event the SUAC team of Lachlan Chisholm, Ben Cross, Robert Alexanderson and Andrew Heil finished second. Like the women, the men’s team sits more than 20 points clear at the top of the table with Randwick Botany Harriers in 2nd position.
The next race for SUAC will be held in three weeks at Ourimbah where the club will contest the NSW Road relay Championships.
